Girls On The Run

Sunday, June 11, 2023

This Spring Ava joined a program called GOTR (Girls On The Run) designed to help young girls build confidence, recognize their inner strength, and leave them feeling inspired.

In a world that often challenges the self-esteem and confidence of young girls, programs that focus on empowerment and personal growth play a crucial role in shaping their futures. Girls On The Run was exactly that. This unique program not only encourages physical activity but also nurtures important life skills and fosters a sense of empowerment in young girls. Watching my 10-year-old blossom through her participation in Girls on the Run was an incredible experience as a parent. We always knew our girl was confident but this program helped her tap into a louder confidence that looked so natural on her.
A little more about the program -- Girls on the Run is more than just a running program; it's a holistic experience designed to inspire young girls to recognize their limitless potential and boldly pursue their dreams. Through a carefully crafted curriculum, participants engage in lessons that cover crucial life skills, including teamwork, communication, goal-setting, and self-respect. These lessons are integrated with physical activities like running, providing a well-rounded approach to personal development.

Witnessing Ava building on those foundational blocks each week showed so much promise and progression. As the weeks progressed, the impact of Girls on the Run became evident in the newfound confidence, resilience, and positive attitude our kiddo toted around. From learning to navigate challenges to celebrating individual strengths, the program really instilled a sense of empowerment that extends far beyond running. At one point I remember talking to one of the teachers who volunteered within the program and in tears, thanking her for the work she was contributing to the girls within the program. I ended up hugging a teacher I didn't even know because I was just filled to the brim with thankfulness.  Girls on the Run emphasized the importance of a supportive community. Coaches, volunteers, and fellow participants created an environment where every girl felt valued and encouraged. And that was pretty evident for the families to see, too.

Watching Ava run that 5k with one of her biggest fans running alongside her was a beautiful core memory. Of course, her siblings and I sat in the bleachers waiting for her to pass us with a celebratory bell and congratulatory "You did it, Ava's" every second we could. This event was not just a race; it was truly a testament to the girls' growth, determination, and newfound belief in their abilities.

Watching Ava running side by side with Justin and crossing the finish line together, symbolized not just physical accomplishment but the strength of their bond. The shared experience became a cherished memory that went beyond the race – a memory of support, encouragement, and the belief that, together, they can conquer any challenge. Our entire is so very proud of the way Ava both started this program and finished it. A beautiful experience all around and our daughter is better for having participated, absolutely.
