As a mom, my New Year's Eve celebrations have typically involved cozy pajamas, a good movie, and maybe a glass of sparkling cider once the kids were in bed.
This year brought an unexpected twist – an invitation to a party hosted by my neighbor's 3-year-old! Intrigued and slightly amused, my family and I decided to embrace the unconventional and attend our first New Year's Eve bash since before having kids of our own. I think the kids really needed a fun and new distraction from all the heaviness and sadness surrounding the fact that Nana was in the hospital.
The party venue was our neighbor's living room and their finished basement - complete with a bounce house, snacks, and music! As we entered, the excitement on the faces of the little guests was adorable! The 3-year-old host proudly showed us around, pointing out his favorite toys and declaring, "This is where the party happens!" Forget about fancy DJs or live bands – our entertainment for the evening consisted of a makeshift dance floor featuring all five kids, and a couple of parents swaying to the rhythm of their own giggles. The playlist included "Pump It Up" and it was easily a fan favorite! It's like the kids created their own anthem which really created an atmosphere of pure joy and carefree celebration. Who knew little people had such killer dance moves?
The snack choices included an assortment of kid-approved delights – homemade sugar cookies, chips, and dip! More than enough to keep the kids satisfied. It also always amazes me how kids can be snack-ready at any time. We had dinner less than an hour beforehand but I imagine all the bounce hop jumps are enough to work up a hearty snack attack! We ended up staying over until after 10pm! I don't think Tatum has ever seen the hour of 10pm in her 2.5 years of life! We said our thank yous, took some photos and headed back home with enough time to put the younger two kiddos down for bed and to watch the ball drop.
Attending a New Year's Eve party hosted by a 3-year-old was a delightful departure from our usual traditions. It reminded me of the beauty of simplicity, the joy of spontaneous celebrations, and the importance of embracing the unexpected. And also how cute is that? Let's support our kids doing the fun and most random of things -- like celebrations! Who doesn't love to celebrate?
In the end, our neighbor's 3-year-old taught us that the best New Year's Eve celebrations are the ones filled with laughter, silliness, and the genuine joy of being together.
Happy New Year!
