Guiding a group of seven vibrant and enthusiastic young girls has been an experience that has not only enriched their lives but has profoundly impacted mine as well.
Over the past six months, my role as a parent to a Girl Scout/ Girl Scout Volunteer, and ultimately a Girl Scout Troop Leader, has been nothing short of inspiring. The growth and connection of our diverse and inclusive troop was such a quick and organic progression (so goes most things with young ladies), that you'd think the girls had known each other all their lives. We've spent the last few months teaching essential life skills, fostering friendships, encouraging teamwork, and community involvement. The girls have chosen so many fun and exciting themes and trips based on what they want to learn this year! The girl-led sentiment is strong with our troop! Each time I'm with my girls, there is always a new opportunity for both the girls and myself to learn, share, and grow. And none of this would be possible without the awesome parents who so selflessly devote their time. Our troop has amazing parents and we are so grateful for them!
When I initially decided to green-light the idea of becoming a troop leader, I knew there had to be concrete values in place, first. That included having the ability to create an environment that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging. Those have always been high on the priority list, especially considering the area in which we reside. I believe it's crucial to cultivate a safe and supportive space where every girl feels empowered to express herself and explore her potential, without any worries about repercussions, feeling unwanted or a lack of growth within a troop.
I'm glad to report, that has never been the case for my girls and it never will be! Recently, the girls earned
a rewarding milestone that was simply earned by a 700% increase in membership (creating a troop and boarding the members in our troop). This statistic not only speaks to the girls' enthusiasm but also to the positive impact our troop has had on the girls within the city we are located in, and the belief from parents that this troop sufficiently fits the needs of their kids. Being part of a community that values their individuality and encourages their growth has undoubtedly played a significant role in this accomplishment as well.
Outside of learning about their troop reward, one of the most (if not the most) exciting benefits of our success has been the opportunity to plan so many fun and exciting ideas for badgework and patches. They have prompted special outings and experiences, learning opportunities, and time to bond as a troop.
It's also really heartening to see their faces light up with pride as they receive recognition for their efforts and achievements. And even with two of my daughters in our troop, I get to watch them grow within their own journies. It's been awesome to watch so much positivity come out of being their troop leader.
The one thing that proves to be quite interesting is the extensive planning that goes into creating months of engaging and enjoyable activities. Our calendar is filled with exciting adventures that promote learning, personal growth, and, most importantly, fun! From outdoor exploration, and impending community service projects to woodworking and skill-building sessions, every activity is carefully designed to cater to the girls' interests and development. The best part (as I mentioned before), it's all by their request or choice or suggestion. So while this part of having a troop takes so much more time than I ever imagined it would, it is totally worth it! I'm thankful to have such a wide bandwidth and a very supportive family and troop family base.
My journey as a Girl Scout troop leader so far has been a deeply fulfilling and transformative experience. Guiding a diverse and inclusive group of girls, watching them flourish individually and as a team, and reaping the rewards of their enthusiasm has been incredibly rewarding. As we move forward, I am excited to see what the future holds for our troop and to continue fostering an environment where girls can not only learn and have fun, but also a space where they find confidence, positivity, SAFETY, and encouragement.
