Get in there!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017
I recently joined this group on facebook called self portraits of motherhood and OH MY GOSH.. it is pure gold. Seriously. I haven't felt this inspired in regards to photography in a good while. I haven't been in this group more than a week or so and I am already seeing my creative juices flow. The idea is to make sure YOU, yes --> you mama <-- are in the frame with your little ones. I have probably been doing self portraits for over a year now, maybe longer? I got my tripod in October 2015 and since then I've taken a lot of documentary photos for myself along with family shots, so I am pretty comfortable with getting in the frame. This group is a community of women that share the most beautiful, emotional, and raw images of themselves in the very throws that is motherhood. I have been in complete awe. Just complete awe. I shared my first image just a couple of days ago and I got such a great response from the other ladies. I get so nervous about sharing my photos but since last night - that feeling is no more.

Just like motherhood, photography is a process. As I continue to grow and become more confident in the type of photos I want to produce - I see changes in myself. In my comfortability. I am excited to see where this new spark takes me. So far, I have been in the frame with my girls everyday this week. I find myself setting up the tripod during play time or right before nap time. I want to look back and remember the phases we were in - toys, dolls, books, etc. I also want to remember all of the smaller details in our lives. Nursing routines, cuddles, and favorite stuffed animals. I want to remember Ava requesting "her songs" on the tablet and trying to scan pandora for disney stations. I want to remember helping Ava set up her dolls in her doll house while watching her stand on her tippy toes. All of our moments. I just want to BE THERE for them all.

I talked to Justin about getting in the frame as a family too. Nothing posed, just our regular moments together. I have a feeling a lot of photos will be from Saturday mornings. There is something about our Saturday mornings that just pave complete magic for the weekend. I'm thinking about sharing some of the images I take on the blog.. if you are interested in seeing them, shoot me an email or comment on the link below. I know this year will be a pretty active one for my readers - so definitely let me know what you'd like to see. I'm hoping it'll spark something for you guys as well. You can never have too many photos of you and your little ones.

Happy Wednesday!

Upgrade

Monday, September 12, 2016
Justin bought me my first "Professional Line" Canon L Series lens and I LOVE IT. Seriously. I don't know why I felt the need to blog this out, but I am so happy I cannot contain myself. I have the highest quality 35mm lens that Canon has to offer. I'd say that calls for some sort of celebration. I really have to hand it to my husband though. He believes in me, my photography aspirations, and more. I am so incredibly thankful to have a partner that reminds me to reach for the skies. Now that I have this SUPER sharp wide lens paired with my canon 6D I feel like I can FINALLY take the quality photos of my family that I have always wanted to. I know our gear doesn't define us, but our gear (or lack thereof) definitely shows the limitations we have to battle when photographing.

Here's a peek at the new beauty in my collection. I am in LOVE.

Unexpected Dreams

Friday, December 4, 2015
It's insane to me how our goals, dreams, and thoughts can change as we grow. I guess it's not really that insane considering the fact that growth does equate change fairly often. But for me, I'm stunned. If you would have asked me even three years ago if I thought i'd see myself trying to start up my own business... in photography.. I would have laughed. I was a very practical person three years ago, and leaping into the unknown for anything outside of my family.. complete rarity. As I sit here tonight typing this very blog, I'm staring at the new work space "office" that Justin has created for me. Gosh, I love this man. He really has been such a great support system through my whirlwind decision to embark even further into photography. Whenever I ask if a notion I have is too crazy, he always replies with something that makes me feel like traveling to the moon is in my grasp. Having him in my corner reminds me that nothing I want is unachievable. It's really a beautiful message to send to our girls too. I hope my girls leap when they feel they want to, not just when it seems practical.

Anywho, about this space. We are turning the family desk/storage area of our home into an office space for this mama bear. I'd like to have everything pertaining to my business in one space with organization, and a sense of privacy when I need it. I'm glad this is an option. Justin came home with this huge dry erase board for me to brainstorm, jot down quick notes, etc. He installed it after dinner, and it looks so great! I plan on framing my business license on the wall close to my desk ( I just got the tangible copy in the mail today), and setting up the new business supplies I got too! I don't know why these things literally have me excited like Christmas morning, but I'm seriously so giddy about this entire process!

I absolutely love the marketing aspect that comes along with promoting your business. I've started from the bottom, and watching myself make even the tiniest stride causes me to just celebrate, BIG. Here lately I have been feeling the repercussions of having a business that is picking up clientele, and I've had to do some serious soul searching to see where my limitations lie. I don't want to lose out on time with my family on the only two days we have together in a week.. but I know sacrifices need to be made in order for my new business to thrive. Time management definitely rings a bell here, and I will definitely be taking much needed time away once Olivia makes her entrance into our world. I truly love this best about being my own boss. I say when I want to do something, I decide when I want to close up shop for a bit, and I decide when too much is too much.

This weekend I'll be putting even more personal touches to the office space, in between spending much needed time with my extended family and taking on a couple of sessions if the weather permits. My hope for anyone who reads this is that realize that the sky truly is the limit. We can achieve anything. And with how crazy life is, we should leap at each opportunity we can.

Happy Friday all!

I'm swamped!

Monday, November 30, 2015
I may or may not have already shared this, but this past month has been a HUGE one on a personal level for me. I obtained a business license for my photography endeavors and I have been working on networking, marketing, and really branding myself these past few weeks. It was a really big step for me, as I have always said that photography is definitely a hobby. I'm really shocked at the gradual growth that came along with my passion for photography, but it's also exciting to be expanding my skills and doing something that makes me happy. That being said, taking on a business endeavor while 8 months pregnant, in the middle of college courses, all while having a 2.5 year old and her daddy? Not so easy. I try to remind myself that even with a family and other priorities, finding something that is just for me is necessary. I have been getting a bit emotional about the work schedule though. This weekend alone, I spent 8 waking hours away from my family. I really can't remember the last time (if ever) I spent that much time away from Ava or Justin on our weekends together.

I got a little teary eyed yesterday on the way to my afternoon session, but it was instantly replaced with a smile when I met the family I was to photograph. I'm optimistic that incorporating this business into my lives will only force even more balance into my world. Justin reminded me that even he has to find balance with his demanding career. While he absolutely hates being away from his girls, he has a job to do, and that has to be a major priority in our lives. The added bonus to everything has been the amount of time Ava bug and her daddy get to bond just one on one. I'm so excited about it because I know once Olivia arrives, this concept won't be completely foreign. I do have to make a decision on what I plan to do once our second baby girl does make her entrance into the world, because everything outside of her and our family will be taking the back burner.

On another note, Thanksgiving for the Howland family could not have gone better. Justin and I woke up at 530 am on Thanksgiving morning to prepare the turkey, and get a head start on some of our other dishes. While I hated waking up early, the outcome was definitely rewarding. This year was the best turkey Justin and I have ever made! It was completely perfect and it definitely received a lot of great reviews. My heart was full knowing we opened our home to other military members and their families. While Thanksgiving was definitely a busy and tiring day, we ended our night watching a Christmas movie. I'd say that's another successful holiday down for us!

Justin also re-enlisted in Seattle (at the Space Needle) this past week. That was an amazing experience to be apart of. Wouldn't you know that in our marriage, each time he's reenlisted, he's been either overseas or out of state at a training facility. It was pretty awesome to have both Ava and I there to witness such a proud moment. Speaking of proud moments, it's also really weird to have a potty trained toddler. I'm going to write up an entirely different post on that, but seriously... watching Ava go into the bathroom alone to handle her business, alone... It's definitely different. We are proud of her, and I'm extremely proud that this switch was made on her time. Tomorrow I'll be 33 weeks pregnant, and I'm sure I'll be sharing some type of update, so look out for that! On that note, Happy Monday all! I hope you all enjoy your week.

Here's a picture of Justin and Ava at the Space Needle after his reenlistment! 520 feet off the ground.

Getting Closer

Monday, March 30, 2015
I can't believe we are closing in on March 2015. This year continues to fly right on by, and because of my current circumstances... I don't really mind a whole lot. I have really enjoyed all this one on one time Ava bug and I are getting. Now that she's getting older, there are a whole lot of things we are able to do. Pedicures, painting (without limitations), and exploring this beautiful state that we live in. This week is going to offer up some pretty decent weather, so I'm planning on taking Ava out to Seattle a couple times for exploration. A friend of mine posted about "saying yes" to her toddler, and while we practice something similar in our household, it's safe to say the reigns could be loosened up a bit more. That is one of my favorite parts about being apart of a community so much larger than just myself. Parents all over inspire other parents to try new things with their kids, or maybe stop during certain things with their kiddos. Any who, my friend Charmi posted a photo of her daughter Kenadee, actively enjoying Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle.

If you have ever been to Pike Place, you know that it's a busy place. Even still, in those photos she posted, her daughter looked so joyful. It was then that I felt inspired to do the same with my own child. While I probably won't be attempting to try this at Pike Place without Justin, i'm opened to doing something similar at a setting that doesn't have as many people. I really do think it's important to let Ava grown and explore without mama hovering all the time. Just yesterday we took a trip down to the park after the "poop" fiasco and I just let her run wild and free. I normally do, but it was definitely different this time. Instead of focusing on the playground, she was actually more focused on the wind and the birds. Each time she saw a bird fly over us, she opened her arms and pretended to fly. She would giggle and clap.. it was seriously the cutest thing ever. When she watched kids walk by, she got super happy and waved at each and every one of them. All the little things she does that could easily go unnoticed, I noticed. I got some great shots of her while we were there and in those moments, my meltdown yesterday was completely diminished.

I'm taking a brief break from school in these next few weeks to focus a bit more on family and my new found love of photography. School is an amazing opportunity that I am able to utilize, but it can also be very stressful. I have to remind myself that breaks are needed, and that breaks are okay. In the meantime, I've been dialing in on more photo inspired things. It's been six full months since I got my camera and each day I find something new to love about it. So far, I've got three "mommy and me" sessions to do, an engagement on the beach, and two toddler birthday shoots! I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see so many beautiful people in front of my camera. I'm continuously learning that it's always the free and easily unnoticed photos that people gush over. Those are the moments we want to retain for the rest of our lives. It feels to be growing in a hobby I never thought i'd fully appreciate as much as I do. Having a mentor definitely helped me dive in a lot deeper than I ever expected.

Ava just woke up from an almost three hour nap, so it looks like I'm off! I'm taking her somewhere fun today, and I'm saying YES to my toddler no matter what! A big thanks to Charmi for continuing to be an inspiration in the world of moms! You are awesome. Here's a picture of Ava bug experiencing fresh soil in her toes. If you know my daughter personally, you know this is a HUGE step for her. She's very particular about her bare feet on anything other than sand.

Happy Monday all!

Three days in

Saturday, February 14, 2015
Yesterday night was my third round of follistim injections, and it seems as if my body is a little more sensitive to the drug this time around. This would also be the reason why I haven't shared any vlogs or daily updates like I thought I would. Hopefully in the days to come I feel a little better than I do now. Honestly, the worst of it is probably the sting after the injection and the fatigue that follows. I'm not one to normally need a bucket load of sleep to function, but these past few days I have felt like I am running on E. We have been running around a lot so I'm sure that also has something to do with it. Washington has given us the last three days filled with sunshine and relatively warm weather so we have taken full advantage of that. Justin busted out the grill last night and made us the most delicious meal. Even Ava bug (who is notoriously picky) chowed down on daddy's good grilled chicken. Last night was also pretty rough because Ava bug got her first real goose egg.

I was filling up Cooper's water bowl with a cereal bowl and she ran past me as I was turning.. Can you guess what happened next? Yep, you guessed it, she ran right into the bowl. I heard the clinking noise but I hadn't realized the bowl hit her head until a few seconds later. She cried for less than a minute, but this mama cried for so much longer. I hate when my girl gets hurt because of me. I was feeling absolutely terrible and the lump on her head is just so big. I comforted, monitored, and prayed on my sweet bug this evening. I'm hoping the swelling goes down a lot over night, so I don't end up dragging her into her pediatric doctor.

I will say through all of this my husband has been a real trooper with everything. He's been making me feel as comfortable as possible through the injections, fatigue, and even our little incident last night with Ava bug's goose bump. He sterilizes and injects the injections, makes sure that I'm all cleaned up after, and he's even been making midnight runs whenever I need something that I forgot to pick up during the day. It makes me feel so incredibly good knowing that Justin does well with his girls being needy. I'm not sure what I'm going to be like in another pregnancy, so I know he's getting prepped early. The other night I started busting out into tears because he refused to take a drink of my water... not really sure why or how that came about, but nonetheless it was so irrational on my part.

Monday morning I go in for my first blood draw and ultrasound to see where my eggs are measuring. Five days will have passed since I took my first injection of follistim. I'm hoping that these low doses are making them grow! I had this thought while I was bathing Ava bug that I totally wouldn't mind having twins the next go round. I came to this conclusion for more than a few reasons, so if that were to occur, I would be ecstatic! Other than ALL of this, I have my second family photo session coming up today! I'm super excited because I definitely decided to take the leap and build up a portfolio of the work I've done. Although I know I don't want to do photography professionally, growth is equally as important. Well, I'm off for now! Ava is down for the count and this mama needs some quality snuggles with her main man!

Happy Valentine's day all!

2015, you are looking great!

Tuesday, January 6, 2015
I am seriously tickled with excitement for my husband right now. I won't share all the details just yet, but Justin got some mega great news at work. As you probably already assumed, it is work related. I am filled with so much happiness you guys, it's not even funny. Watching my husband's hard work, diligence, and focus pay off is one of the most heart warming feelings I have ever felt. I know I'm bias, but Justin is such a great leader. He takes care of his soldiers and he genuinely cares about them. Those are attributes I can only hope that will be instilled in our daughter. I know that his work ethic has definitely left me feeling completely motivated for when I take that leap back into the workplace.

In other news, I have taken on a new photography challenge from the wonderful Victoria Simmons, of Victoria Simmons Photography. I wanted to find a deeper focus with photography, and it looks like I've found it. I want to push myself even further and acquire even more skills this year. I still don't see myself taking photography into a career goal, but I genuinely enjoy taking pictures and learning how to edit them effectively. Up until about a week ago, I thought I really only enjoyed taking pictures of my family and our everyday happenings... I've noticed that this notion has changed. I took photos for some friends of mine this past week and I absolutely loved it.

I enjoyed being able to watch their love in the moments I was snapping away. I enjoyed being able to capture the essence of those outside of my everyday life. I seriously got chills down my spine at one point when I captured a kiss between the two love birds. I'm always a sucker for genuine love on camera. I'm not sure if this feeling I have is going to last, or how it came about, but I plan on exploring it completely. I can't remember the last time I left the house without my camera, and I hope this lasts the rest of my days for sure.

In even happier news, Ava bug is almost 20 months old. **Yes, I am still counting the months until my sweet girl is two years old** and I have so much to share on her 20 month update. She started saying a few more words, so naturally Justin and I are gushing! We've also been asking her if she'd like a sibling, and each time.. she nods her head yes. It is the SWEETEST thing I have ever seen and we are thrilled at her little toddler response. Let's just hope when the time actually arrives that she feels the same way.

Our move is approaching very quickly as well! We literally only have nine more days left until the big moving day! Everything is set to switch over to the new house, and of course Justin made sure direct t.v. was set to come before the playoffs this weekend. We also have a set date that we will be arriving in New York for Justin's grandfather's military memorial services. It looks like we will for sure be there in April to attend the memorial and spend time with his family. I'm still extremely saddened for the reason we are traveling, but I'm glad that we will finally be able to give tangible support to all of those who loved Papoo so very much.

Well, that's all for now guys. I have a new vlog coming out (hopefully) in the next week, so be sure to check that out! I hope the new year is treating you well and that you are still sticking to some of those resolutions!

Happy Tuesday all!

DIY Photo Backdrop

Sunday, November 30, 2014
So this "momtographer" put together her first DIY photo back drop project. Thanks to a couple great friends, my husband, and Miss Charmi, I found an easy and inexpensive project to do. I will admit that I am not your average crafty type of person.. I am far below the average. I thought that it was going to be super hard, so I had no problem pawning this project off on others that offered their assistance. Because I failed to remember that I obviously needed dimensions, I was forced to do this on my own (almost, thanks baby). I wanted to share all that I learned from this with my readers or other "momtographers" that are interested in doing their own photo backdrops. We purchased all of our backdrop supplies from Lowe's and the total came to $10.81 with my husband's military discount.

SUPPLIES

(2) 10′ lengths of 3/4″ PVC
(1) 5′ length of 3/4″ PVC
(4) 3/4″ PVC end caps
(4) 3/4″ PVC T Pieces
(2) 3/4″ PVC Elbow Pieces
***  YOU MUST get the “slip” end caps, T pieces and elbows.  If you get the “threaded” version it will not slide onto the PVC pipe *** Trust me when I say to check, I didn't follow instructions (thank goodness Justin was with me).
MEASUREMENTS
2 pieces cut at 54 inches long (cut from one 10′ pipe)
4 pieces cut at 30 inches long (cut from second 10′ pipe)
4 pieces cut at 12 inches long (cut from 5′ pipe)
*** If you do not own a saw of some sort OR you decide you'd rather not cut the pipes yourself, the staff at Lowe's is more than willing to assist. They cut all of our PVC pipes in the exact measurements we needed ***
STEPS
1. Attach one 12 inch piece to a "T" piece and add another 12 inch piece to the opposite end.  Put end caps on each end and repeat. These will end up being your leg stands!

2. Connect a 30 inch piece to the stand leg and add another "T" piece. Attach one more 30 inch piece and repeat for the other stand leg.

3. Using the two "T" pieces in the center, connect one of the 54 inch pieces to each side of the stand legs.

4.  Add the last (and final)  54 inch piece to the top by using the two elbow pieces on the tops of the 30 inch pipes.

Those were all the steps I used to create my DIY photo back drop. Keep in mind that the edges of the PVC pipes might not all be straight after cutting. I had to use a wrench to pull in some of the dented parts that prevented the pipes from going smoothly inside their end caps and such. I purchased some oversized blankets that are going to make great backgrounds for some of the Ava bug sessions I have coming up, and I'm so excited about it. Stay tuned for her Christmas holiday photos, because I'm sure I'll be sharing a few.

Happy Sunday all!

Mama got a new lens

Wednesday, October 29, 2014
This photography "stuff" has become a bit of an obsession lately. I enjoy taking quality photos of my family and I'm really learning more than I ever expected to learn about the entire process of taking photos. That being said, I am already realizing that certain accessories I own have placed limitations on the type of photos I want to take. Although I have zero plans of pursuing a career in photography, I keep reminding myself that creating my own art in the form of a photo is enough validation to splurge when needed on camera accessories. Which brings me to the title of this blog post. I purchased a new lens yesterday after consulting with other photographers in an "inspire me" group. I want to take better quality photos while I am indoors.

It's been raining too much in the state of Washington these last couple weeks, so a lot of the photos i've taken have had to be indoors. I don't mind taking pictures indoors, but it definitely is discouraging when you don't have a lens that fits your needs. Since purchasing my new lens, I have noticed a complete 180 in my indoor photos. They aren't as grainy, and they have this "creamy" factor to them. I absolutely love it! So far I've got three different kinds of lenses, and at least one of them suit my needs for indoor and outdoor photos.

I plan on purchasing at least a couple more lenses as I learn and grow more with my current DSLR. For those of my readers that were anxious to see my photography blog... I opted not to share it. I'm recording my own personal document of my experience, and as much as I love sharing my life and passions with you guys, I'd really like to keep this journey to myself (for the most part). Take a look at some of the indoor photos I snapped this morning. I didn't edit them or change anything. These are straight from the camera. Isn't Ava bug just a doll? She's been working on her letters and numbers from the learning books her nana sent.  I hope you enjoyed these pictures as much as I do! The exposure is a bit too high, but overall, I'm impressed.

Happy Wednesday all!

Bye Bye

Friday, October 10, 2014
It finally happened. Ava bug has finally stumbled onto more "real" words and I don't know how to feel about it. The other night, we were all piled on the couch just chit chatting before bed... all of a sudden Ava turns to look at Justin and says, "Byeee bye." She then proceeded to wave goodbye with her hands and walk away. We (of course) responded with lots of kisses and a loud applause. She was pretty darn proud of herself after that. In those moments when all of this was happening, I couldn't help but feel a little sad. That's my baby growing up in front of me. It really is an emotional whirlwind, confrontingt that notion. Even on the days where motherhood challenges me more than most, I would (and still plan to) do this all over again. These are the days that remind me of how sweet and innocent life can be. The days that give me the curve in my smile.

In other news, Ava bug and I both made new friends this week. If you know me personally, you know that friend is not a term I use lightly. Things happened really fast with Miss T and her sweet baby Zoe. Long story short, Justin and her husband work together. We invited them to our weekly little gym class (blogged about this a couple weeks ago) and then the next thing you know I'm messaging Miss T asking if she'd like to get together for a playdate. Our husbands discussed it at work, so I just took the initiative in reaching out. That same day, Zoe and Ava ended up having their first one on one playdate. Can I just say, swooon? The girls are SO cute together. They share really well, and they seem to be fond of one another. I was super impressed for that being the first time they really interacted. Turns out the mamas really hit it off as well! We have very compatible personalities, and I foresee an awesome friendship emerging!

Since Justin has a four day weekend, I'm not entirely sure what we have going on. I know Ava bug has another play date with Zoe, we have to head out to the pumpkin patch (again), and my family will be over at some point during the weekend. I think another impromptu trip may be in the works, so we'll see! In the meantime, take a look at a couple of the pictures I've taken recently. This "momtographer" stuff has got me seriously obsessed with my camera. Have any of my other mama's started playdates with their toddlers? If so, what age did you start? When did you notice that your toddler really interacted? I'd love to hear from you by email or the comments below.

Happy Friday all!

The Mister

Thursday, July 3, 2014
Today really couldn't get any better. We are so close to having Justin back home with us, and I can hardly contain myself. These past three weeks have been pretty tough on Bug and I. She's always had her daddy around and I think her curious little mind wonders why she is looking at daddy through a screen, instead of in person. That is the hands down worst part about being married to a servicemen. One of the upsides is the reunion! Of course I'm excited to have my husband back, but I'm more excited for Ava to have her daddy home! Washington Summer is definitely among us, and there are so many things Justin wants to do with her. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing the two people I love most in this world, bond.

In preparation for my husband's return, I have decided to go all out, and I wouldn't be able to do this without the help of my parents. I really am grateful that we live back in my home state. All I had to do was call my dad up and ask if they could head over and help with Ava for the day. He did me one more and has offered to help with the three course seafood meal I plan to make! Extra hands has really made a difference in Justin's absence; especially with people I love and trust. I try not to think about when we'll be leaving Washington state, but I know it's going to happen. I really have gotten used to all the help I have here. If an emergency arises, there are a million family members that would be willing to take Ava. If I need a night off with my husband, I know that we can always leave her with my parents. It's not going to be like that at every duty station, so I really am enjoying the help while I have it.

These next few days are going to go by quickly, and I plan on taking a long technology hiatus. I feel like all I've been doing is staying attached to my computer in my "free" moments. Whenever Justin comes home, I like to give him that quality family time that we all really need. He will have a couple extra days off, so I'm sure we will end up doing something outdoors. Also, something to be on the look out for on my blog from now on, "My Ava Bug was here" project. I follow so many talented photographers in our area, and one of them sparked this idea for me. Taking a daily picture of the mark Ava leaves behind. A documentation of the marks she leaves on our world for one full year. With the upgrade of a new camera, and my love for blogging, I thought this would be perfect for me. You can watch Ava grow, and my photos.

I've received some pretty interesting emails this past week, and if anyone else would like to see a specific topic featured, be sure to email me or comment below. The link for my email is located in the envelope icon on the right side of my blog. I plan on actively blogging again starting late next week. That's all for now guys! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week, and like always, Happy Thursday all!

Photography

Saturday, June 7, 2014
I'm going to make this short, but I just had to share. Today I had a fabulous time exploring Seattle with my sweet family. I took a million photos "story telling" our day, and I just couldn't fight the overwhelming feeling I had to pursue thoughts of photography. I've never had a passion for photos (until now), I've never had this urge to go out and take a camera along (until now). Having a beautiful family has shifted my thoughts on what's important while documenting our lives.

With all the money we have invested in family photos, and the money we will invest in the future, it really makes sense to invest in a great quality camera, and learn how to shoot and edit myself. I don't see myself making this a career choice, but I do see myself using my new found skills to ensure that my family always has beautiful, everyday life, storytelling photos. I have found the importance in a moment. I have seen first hand how one photo can cause a million emotions. I want that for myself and my family. I want to be able to take photos everyday, not just because of an occasion. On days like today when we head out to the zoo, or the water, I want to capture the special daddy/daughter moments that Justin and Ava have. I want Justin to be able to capture the special moments that Ava bug and I share too. It's important to have these moments documented. Life is going by so incredibly fast, and I don't want to skip a beat.

On that note, I'm off! I'm excited for this new chapter opening in our lives. I'm also excited that I live in a part of our nation that offers a ton of mentors and help! I don't know where this new journey will take us, but I'm excited that Justin and I have both committed to it.

Happy Saturday all!

Mother's Day

I could not have asked for a better weekend with my loved ones. It felt great to vacation and separate myself from technology. One of our getaway rules was leaving technology behind, and I'm glad that we did. Saturday presented rain (and chilly weather), which was fine, but we got out and explored the outdoors. I was reminded of my love for the West coast during our getaway, and I am proud to say that I'm from here. There is no other place that takes my breath away like the Coast of Oregon or the lush Evergreen of Washington state. It's nice to see Justin appreciating some of the things that are so close and dear to my heart. I plan on bringing Ava bug back to Cannon beach this summer, and a lot of other hiking trails in Portland. The fact that Oregon is a tax free state doesn't hurt either. We love the state of Oregon and can't wait to return!

Ava has been able to spend a ton of time with my family this weekend, and that's always a good time. From the moment I woke up this morning, up until now, I have felt like such a Queen. I woke up to breakfast already made, I got the sweetest cards from Justin and Ava, and some of the sweetest gifts, including flowers from my daddy. Justin bought me these reusable, pink chevron bags, with photos of Ava and I plastered all over them (thank you shutterfly). It says Happy Mother's day mommy on the bags, and they seriously brought me to tears. His gift was so thoughtful and supportive of my "going green" movement. I will rock these bags everyone I go! I plan to use them on Wednesday when we head out to do Ava's cake smash photos. You guys have no idea how stoked I am for these photos. Chloe, has offered to do some nursing photos of Ava and I while we are in her studio, and I am getting so ancy for them. I'm almost positive Chloe Photography is going to be our new family photographer. She does some amazing work, and I'm delighted I found her. We got the cake ordered and all set up on Saturday, and I have a feeling it's going to be beyond beautiful. For those of you in the Puyallup area, make sure you check out Wanna Cupcake in downtown Puyallup. The customer service was excellent, and the cakes/cupcakes are even better!

Overall my weekend was great. I got a lot of great photos from our vacation, and a lot of photos from today. I have so much love surrounding me, it's completely moving. I couldn't have envisioned a better first Mother's day, and I am already thinking up a special Father's day for Justin. Justin will be in school over the next month, and I will be involved in a lot of FRG functions for his company. Hopefully that won't limit the amount of blog posts I put up. I still plan on blogging daily until Ava's big day. I'm really excited to be interacting with his new company, and even more excited for all of the toddler play dates Ava will have. I still can't believe we have just six days until Ava bug is one year old. I plan on sharing some of the photos we have taken from her session on Wednesday, so be on the look out.

Happy Sunday all, and happy Mother's day to all of the wonderful mama's out there!

Good, Bad, and Good Again

Wednesday, May 7, 2014
As of today, I am no longer sick! I'm pretty sure Justin and Miss Ava are in the clear too. We all managed to catch some brief stomach bug, but I'm glad it's behind us now. I really do hate when my babies are sick. The day I posted about my illness, Ava threw up that very same night. Looks like we won't be making it through her first year with only three sick episodes, but four is still just as low, and I'll take it! Speaking of her first year, can you believe that in just ten short days, my sweet and beautiful bug will be ONE year old?! I am so excited, especially because I just booked her first cake smash photo session for next week.

Cake smash session? Yes. Here goes the bad news. Victoria (our GA. photographer) that originally planned on heading out to Washington tomorrow, had to cancel her travel plans. Her little girl is not feeling all that well, and she has to undergo some medical testing. As sad as I am that she won't be making it out to the Pacific Northwest, I am glad that she is getting the answers she needs for her little girl Adalin. This left me to find a new photographer for Ava's birthday, family photos, and mommy and me sessions. I was pretty frantic, but I have to say, I stumbled upon a diamond in the rough. I am really pleased (so far) with the professionalism of our new found photographer and her work. She has done multiple sessions with infants, babies, and cake smashes. I was instantly impressed with her photos, and If all goes well with the cake smash, I cannot wait to book future sessions.

I'm beyond excited that we decided to photograph Ava and her cake rather than Ava at her birthday. I wish you all could have seen me earlier. I was seriously on the verge of renting a camera and lens that I had never seen before, let alone use. A lot of people don't see the "big deal" about photos, but I do. I love having beautiful portraits hanging in my home. I love having scrapbooks for Ava, ready for her to see and love when she's older. Pictures are truly the only things that last forever when our memories and time on earth fade. I know that last part was a bit heavy, but it's very true. My love of photos (of me and my growing family), began when I fell pregnant with Ava. I can't tell you how many times I go back and look at my maternity photos.

I am so relieved that I found a photographer in our location. If you didn't guess already, this would be the second good part of this blog. Today was a beautiful day, and I'm hoping this trend lasts these next couple weeks! It would be amazing to have nothing but shine on Ava's big day. Still can't believe Justin and I are closing in on this first year of parenting. Make sure to check back on the blog for my very first cloth diapering 101 blog/video post, toddler meals, and Ava's first year in review!

Happy Wednesday all! Hug and kiss your loved ones!

Portrait Innovations

Saturday, February 15, 2014
Today was such an awesome day in the rainy state of Washington. We went ahead and got our first set of family photos done in a fully loaded photography studio. Can I just say, I am in love! I was expecting to pay a lot more than what we did, and I was expecting to get a lot less photos than we did. The photographers were great with getting Ava to smile and show expression, and the props were a lot of fun too. We spent over an hour and a half shooting photos, and I loved that we didn't feel rushed for time. Each background we had was different than the last; we even got to chose which studio room we liked best. I never thought I'd like doing super posey photos, but it turns out I do, and I'm glad we had this experience! To top things off, they gave me over 50 photos on a disc to take home, and a set of twenty (FREE) Valentine day cards to send out to friends and family. Portrait Innovations is primarily in the eastern/Midwest part of the nation, but they are definitely worth giving a look see (Portrait Innovations).

Take a look at some of the priceless shots that were captured today:

We were definitely pleased with our session today, and we plan on coming back for more patriotic or Denver Bronco photos! If you are military, make sure you ask about military discounts. Each family gets a military discount on any of their packages. Well, It looks like I'm off for the night! We were able to get over nine sheets of prints from our session today, and I now need to figure out where I am going to hang all these lovely new photos of my little family. Happy Saturday all!

So good to me Saturday

Saturday, May 4, 2013
I went to a two year old's birthday party today and this party confirmed I am STILL a firm believer you can never have too much pink ! My friend, Ann decorated her entire home in a pink//princess theme for her daughter's big day ! It felt so good to be around such positive energy. Even with kids all around, there was so much laughter, and EATING and just warmth in her home today. I absolutely love events like this. The cake was just the highlight of the day, it was magical !

The photographer I've had my entire pregnancy (https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaSimmonsPhotography)

captured a couple belly photos for me today. Check out my growing girl at 37 weeks 2 days.

I'm friends with Victoria so obviously my opinions are a tad bias ;) But seriously It's been a blessing to have such a dependable, focused, and easy going photographer throughout my pregnancy. She will also be accompanying me in labor and delivery  as well as Ava's first newborn session. Being a military spouse means you move a lot LOL so take a look at some of the work she's done. You never know, she might be in your area next.

Lastly, I wanted to rave about my changing station in Ava's room. I've gotten all my cloth prepped and ready to go. I purchased a wipe warmer for her cloth wipes at home, and I FINALLY picked up a pail for her cloth diaper pail liner.

I've got newborn prefolds on the top left. My diaper caddy filled with covers, nipple creams, and tea packages by earth mama angel baby to help with the production of breast milk.  I've got my pocket diapers prepped, stuffed, and ready to go on the right. Organic coconut oil for her diaper rash substitute. The wipes warmer is also on this shelf only because our hospital bags are packed on her dresser. Once a few things get switched around after Ava's birth, nothing will be as cluttered. On the bottom I have the next sized prefolds, my breast pump, and a few other gadgets to help with breastfeeding. You see my trash pail for her dirty cloth diapers? Cost me $12.00 ! I bought it at the PX on post here. It just amazes me how much money cloth diapering families will spend on a pail. They are all, for lack of better description for waste.. poop ! pee ! I see no point in spending thirty dollars on a pail, when the cheaper ones do the trick ! Mine is a step pail. I love it !

I'm so ready for induction. I've got 12 days until that occurs, unless Ava comes sooner. I'm nesting, nesting, nesting. Counting down the days ! I hope everyone had a positive vibes Saturday, like I did !
